JUTC sees $3m revenue increase since SmarterCard fraud uncovered

The chairman of the board of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) says the entity's daily revenue has risen by more than $3 million since the latest scam at the company was discovered.
A SmarterCard audit carried out last week revealed that some drivers and other employees had breached the cashless system and stolen millions of dollars.
The company's chairman, Reverend Garnett Roper says the company will be relentless in its drive to clamp down on fraud, which has accounted for millions of dollars being fleeced. At least 75 drivers have been fired this year, the majority for pilferage.
In the meantime, Reverend Roper has rapped the company's bus drivers some of whom he blames for trying to re-entrench disorder and chaos on the roads and engaging in misconduct, which he says borders on sabotage.
He made the declaration during a JUTC staff meeting Sunday in the wake of recent incidents of alleged driver fraud and a record number of accidents in October.
There were 113 accidents involving JUTC buses in October, which was 25 per cent more than the average of 90 crashes per month reported by Reverend Roper in September.
And Reverend Roper says the management believes it is not beyond the JUTC to build a culture of safety and for its drivers to become the standard-bearers by which all motorists are judged.
