New US ambassador confirmed

Luis Moreno, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, has been confirmed

as the next United States (US) ambassador to Jamaica.

Moreno's appointment was confirmed by the US Senate yesterday.

He is to be sworn in soon before he is dispatched to Jamaica.

Moreno succeeds Pamela Bridgewater, who retired from office in November 2013.

Moreno is currently the deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in Madrid, Spain.

"Throughout his time with the Foreign Service, Mr Moreno served as refugee coordinator at the US Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti; international relations officer in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs at the US Department of State; and deputy director of Narcotics Affairs at the US Embassy," the US State Department said.
