Vox pop: Should more vending zones be created to remove vendors from the streets?

Yes! You can't get to walk on the sidewalks properly when they're on it. You have to be walking into the road, like especially Downtown (Kingston). As long as the Government provides them with a place that's central, I don't see anything wrong with that.

Yeah! I 100 per cent believe so. Ah pass a lady and her pickney di other day, and she call me one whole heap a name. Some a dem disgusting, man. Dem need to be put in a place weh dem caan harass di people dem.

Lilet Frater

Yeah, because the sidewalk is very busy, and the people in the stores can't get to sell as much when dem out on the sidewalk.

If di Government can build places round weh di people dem deh, den mi nuh see nothing wrong wid that. But as a peddler, mi haffi go to the people dem. Mi walk and sell; dem nah come to wi. Nuh designated place caan deh fi we. Mi haffi walk road. That's where the money is.

Yes. Like in Half-Way Tree, for instance, you have the Digicel-branded booths. It looks much more attractive than everybody just uncoordinated. You shouldn't have to be walking all over the place and bouncing into other people and their things.

Yeah. That's how it's supposed to go. The Government should definitely put up a place for them to stay - somewhere more secure. Provided we have access in and out of them, that would make sense.

Of course, they should make more places so that they can earn their own money. Work not issuing, so we Jamaicans have to try to create something for ourselves, our kids, and our families. If we don't create work for ourselves, how will we achieve? How will our kids eat?

Yes, definitely. If the vendors [are] on the road, they are going to block traffic. If they're on the sidewalks, they will also block up the sidewalks. You can't even walk on the sidewalks when dem on it. I think it would be a wise decision to move them to these locations.
