Jamaica to ship bauxite from Alpart after seven-year break
The government today reopened Port Kaiser in St Elizabeth in anticipation of the first shipment of bauxite from the Alpart alumina plant in seven years.
South East St Elizabeth MP Richard Parchment, in whose constituency the plant falls, says 35,000 tonnes of bauxite will be shipped to Russia later this week.
The Alpart plant was closed because of low market price and high production costs.
However, operations restarted in March.
