Rodney's coach, Deandra Whyte, about winning: "I am really, really elated. I knew that Rodney could do this; I had no doubt in him. We put in the work and the trust that we have in God, we came out victorious."

Preparing for parish finals: "We started preparing from last year, knowing that the competition would be at the start of the school year. We do weekend classes, we do pull-outs during school hours, after school.

Preparation for nationals: "We have a lot of work to do. We have to go back to the drawing board; there are some words in the book we have not covered yet. We just plan to take it one step at a time. We have some time till February, so by then we should be fully prepared for the competition."

* Broughton Primary copped both top spots - parish champion and champion girl. Rodney went through the entire spelldown in his socks.

Coach: "I didn't expect one and two, but I am really happy that Sabrina Clarke came up second and as champion girl for the parish."
