The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) says it has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in Bamboo Lane, Morant Bay, St Thomas.

The incident occurred at approximately 2 a.m. yesterday.

The dead man has been identified as Shamar Elliot, a 22-year-old construction worker.

According to INDECOM, the police said the incident was reported as a murder, but, when they responded, residents insisted that a police officer was involved in the shooting.

A team from INDECOM comprised of investigators and forensic examiners responded approximately 6:45 a.m.

Since then, INDECOM said it has processed the scene and the body of the deceased, and has continued to make enquiries regarding the police officer accused of involvement in the incident.

"Investigators have interviewed several witnesses and will be revisiting the community with a view to collecting more information," INDECOM said.

The Independent Commission of Investigations is appealing to anyone who may have witnessed or can provide any information about the incident to call its head office in Kingston at 1-876-968-8875, or call our mobile number at 1-876-878-0167.
