Is Jamaica ethical?
Representatives of the National Bioethics Committee of Jamaica, addressing a Gleaner Editors' Forum last week, put forward their views on whether they feel Jamaica is an ethical, unethical or highly unethical country.
Dr Wayne West
I would answer that question by saying I have met many poor people in Jamaica who hit nine out of 10 (very ethical people).
Jamaica is a very wonderful country, but we don't realise it; that is the pain. When you go into the country (rural areas), and you seek help, people are literally ready to leave what they are doing to take you to where you are going before going back to their business.
I have been disappointed in the level of unethical behaviour that I see right across the board. There are pockets of good, but there are way too many pockets of unethical behaviour from the high to the low.
The noisy minority is Jamaica's problem. I feel there are people in this country that are of high ethical standards.
