Former Mayor of Lucea Shernet Haughton yesterday pleaded not guilty to breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act when she appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court.

Haughton is charged with failing to file statutory declarations for 2012 and 2013 after the Commission for the Prevention of Corruption reported her to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Her attorney revealed in court that both declarations were filed last year.

As a result, the attorney questioned why the former mayor was charged.

"She is not before the court for late filing, but failing to file," the attorney argued.

However, prosecutor Karen Seymour Johnson explained that Haughton's declaration was not only out of time, but in breach of the legislation.

Haughton is to return to court on July 19.
