A police constable and two teenagers are now hospitalised following an alleged shootout on the East-West leg of Highway 2000 this afternoon.

The police say that about 1:00 p.m., a team was conducting vehicle check point operations on the toll road when they signalled the driver of a Toyota Corolla motorcar to stop.

The driver complied and the cops reportedly approached the motorcar.

It is alleged that two men then got out of the motorcar, and opened gunfire and a shoot-out ensued.

When the shooting subsided, it was discovered that one of the cops was hit.

A 17-year old female and a 14-year-old boy who were travelling in the Corolla had received gunshot wounds.

All three are now being treated at hospital.

The two attacker escaped in a nearby community.

The driver who fled the scene was later accosted and is now in police custody.
