WESTERN BUREAU:

Spanish hotelier Excellence Group Luxury Hotels will invest US$110 million to construct an adults-only resort at Oyster Bay in Trelawny.

Groundbreaking on the 325-suite luxury resort will be done in February, with completion set for the first half of 2018, said a media release from the group.

Renowned for their award-winning resorts in the Caribbean, this is Excellence's first Jamaican resort, a development that Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett says will add significant value to the stock of high-end offerings of Jamaica's accommodation sector.

"The Government of Jamaica is very pleased about this new foreign investment. It emphasises the attractiveness of Jamaica for investors and new partners," said the tourism minister, who is attending the Fitur Trade Fair in Italy.

Idyllic location

Located 30 minutes from the Sangster International Airport, the Oyster Bay hotel will include 800-square-foot junior suites and 2,000-square-foot sprawling upper suites featuring expansive living spaces, panoramic oceanviews, and direct beach access.

"Excellence Oyster Bay will have an idyllic location in the Montego Bay area in a private peninsula surrounded by calm turquoise waters on one side and the Glistening Waters lagoon on the other. The picturesque Falmouth town is also a short drive away," the group's statement read.

They expect to create approximately 2,000 jobs during its construction phase and an additional 660 jobs when the hotel begins operation.
