Western Bureau:

Some people desirous of owning their own home should get the opportunity to do so soon as possible because according to Prime Minister Andrew Holness, the National Housing Trust (NHT) plans to construct 24 new housing schemes across the island before the end of this year.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony for The Estuary housing development in Friendship, St James, last Friday, Holness said that the new housing schemes are part of the Government's prosperity plan.

"Sum'n a gwaan in Jamaica!" Holness said with regard to The Estuary, a $7.33 billion joint-venture partnership between the NHT and West Indies Home Contractors Limited (WIHCON).

The development will consist of 1,500 one-bedroom detached units with an estimated selling price of $4.47 million each. The first 300 housing units are expected to be completed by June 2017.

Touting the housing develop-ments as a clear indication that his 'from poverty to prosperity' agenda is yielding good results, Holness lamented that while good work is being done to improve the lives of Jamaicans, there still exists a pessimistic core within the society that does nothing but seek to tear down Jamaica's name.

TIME FOR UNITY

"It is time for the destructive politics to end. I invite the Opposition, private sector, sceptics - everybody - to get on board for a more constructive politics for Jamaica," Holness said. "And I am sure we can all gather around the NHT to ensure that we are constructing a brighter, prosperous future for all the people of Jamaica."

Addressing the ceremony, WIHCON Chairman Peter Melhado said: "We promise families that we will bring professionalism. Our focus on quality, commitment to excellence, and our desire for nation building in everything will be on show at The Estuary. It will be a coveted address for years to come."

With regard to the other housing schemes that are to come on stream, NHT Chairman Dr Nigel Clarke said that more projects are to be launched over the next 90 days.
