A development programme for young athletes training with the Racers Track Club will be given a boost as the club is set to benefit from the proceeds of a charity dinner and auction in London, to be hosted by The Voice newspaper and the Jamaica National Group next month.

The event is one of several planned in celebration of the 35th anniversary of the community newspaper serving black communities in parts of Britain.

According to Paulette Simpson, a director of The Voice, the event also presents itself as an opportunity to honour the achievements of sprinting superstar Usain Bolt and head coach at the club, Glen Mills.

Opportunity to recognise their achievements

"This charity event is being held ahead of the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in August," Simpson stated, "where Usain Bolt will be participating in his final international competition. This dinner, therefore, presents The Voice and the Jamaica National Group with the opportunity to recognise the achievements of Coach Glen Mills and Usain Bolt and to honour their contribution to the international success of Jamaican athletes."

The charity dinner and auction will be held at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Sunday, July 16.

The host for the evening will be British Olympic and World Championship medallist and broadcaster Colin Jackson.

The auction will offer the chance for guests to acquire unique sports items that have been donated by Jamaican and international athletes, as well as English Premier League football clubs. The Gleaner Company has donated a special edition of Usain Bolt: Legend, a tribute to Bolt, to be auctioned at the July event.

Over the years, Racers Track Club has nurtured many brilliant Jamaican athletes under the tutelage of Mills and has produced several world-class competitors, including World and Olympic champion and world record holder Bolt, as well as World Champion Yohan Blake.
