The flood monitoring system at the Bog Walk Gorge in St Catherine is to be upgraded.

The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) is providing €219,000 in grant funding for the project.

An automatic flood early warning system was previously installed on the Rio Cobre which is interlinked by the Bog Walk Gorge.

But the CDB says the system has been inoperable due to lightning strikes that disabled the transmitters.

Coordinator of the CDB’s Environmental Sustainability Unit, Cheryl Dixon, says flooding of the Rio Cobre puts a number of communities at risk.

Dixon says the project will help to support the delivery of accurate and early notifications to residents and key stakeholder groups such as motorists, the police, and the fire brigade.

She further says the project will help to reduce the loss of life and reduce damage caused by flooding.
