#IanBoyne broke social media sites - Youth react with disbelief at passing of veteran journalist and commentator
Yesterday's passing of highly respected journalist Ian Boyne occasioned an outpouring of grief on popular social media sites, with many users taking to Facebook and Twitter to register their disbelief and utter shock at the news of his death.
On the latter, the words "Ian", "Veteran", "#IanBoyne" were consistently the top trends for much of yesterday, not only in Jamaica, but throughout the wider Caribbean region and Western Europe.
According to social media analytics, terms relating to Boyne peaked at more than 1,100 tweets per hour, totalling more than 40,000 individuals mentioning, up to press time, far surpassing the rest of trending topics.
It was Prime Minister Andrew Holness' early-morning tweet announcing Boyne's passing along with The Gleaner's breaking news story that led the top tweets and eventually opened the floodgate.
Young people, especially, joined in to pay tribute to the media veteran, many who did not meet him personally, but whose lives he, through his work, touched in unimaginable ways.
Every ghetto yute one day did see dem self a smile up with Ian Boyne pon profile. He was a source of inspiration.
Wow, Ian Boyne's interviews, especially Profile, were a source of inspiration for many. Jamaica has lost an icon in journalism.
I can't even lie. Ian Boyne's death has rocked me. I just cannot believe it. I read his In Focus articles EVERY SUNDAY morning, watch Profile every Sunday evening, watched Religious Hard Talk every Tuesday night and listened to the show before it used to air on TV.
It's sad to see such a professional, inspirational and hard working man like Ian Boyne pass away. He has inspired generations and gave us the opportunity to see so many experiences and create our own #RipIanBoyne
We have lost one of the most intelligent, critical thinking, well written and expressive persons in Jamaica today (yesterday). There is so much I learnt from Ian Boyne without ever meeting this man. True definition of greatness...may his soul RIP.
Another giant has left us. Journalist #IanBoyne was a tour de force, passionate about telling #stories of ordinary #Jamaicans who overcome great odds to achieve professional success. His #politicalcommentary(ies) were solidly researched & argued. Thank you Ian.
My heart is heavy... RIP Ian Boyne!!!
I always dreamed of being interviewed by Ian Boyne. A man of vision. One I've always admired. This news is disheartening.
My heart is weeping. I was rooting for you to have a quick recovery. RIP #IanBoyne. Thank you for actualising one of my dreams of being on your show. You will not be forgotten. Your work lives on.
Ian Boyne is a true representation of giving the best version of yourself while you're here. Death is inevitable and we have no control of that, but to live, that is entirely up to you. He made a mark, we know he was here. Thank you Mr Boyne.
