McGregor: The salaries of cops in the lower ranks are unacceptable.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Steve McGregor wants the government to bring the salaries of rank and file cops closer to those of gazetted officers.

McGregor made the call during an interview on Power Talk on Power 106FM this morning.

McGregor, who is vice chairman of the Police Officers' Association (POA), says the salaries of cops in the lower ranks are unacceptable.

Referring to the six per cent increase the government has offered to rank and file cops over a two-year period, he said the Administration  should instead offer that to officers.

The Government and the Jamaica Police Federation, which represents rank and file cops, hit a stalemate in the wage negotiations late last year after the Finance Ministry insisted it would pay no more than an additional six per cent over two years to public sector workers.

The police went on a sick-out after seeking the intervention of the Prime Minister.

The talks were expected to resume last week, however, there has been no word on its progress.
