Gov't working to remove 'badge of honour' from being imprisoned

State minister in the National Security Ministry Pearnel Charles Jnr has asserted that many criminals see serving jail time as a badge of honour and the government is working to change this.

Charles was speaking this morning in the Sate of the Nation Debate in the Upper House.

He said a part of the thrust of his government is do its best to fix the current dysfunctional correctional system:

Senator Charles also lamented that the re-offending rate is 42 per cent.

This means that 42 per cent of criminal offenders who either served jail time, paid fines or were placed on probation again found themselves in trouble with the law.
