Businessman Michael McLean has been convicted of slaughtering six members of a St Thomas family, including four children in a killing that shocked the nation 12 years ago.

After a five-week trial that included 15 witnesses and mainly circumstantial evidence, a seven-member jury deliberated for just over three hours before returning a unanimous guilty verdict.

McLean showed no emotion and said nothing as the decision was announced.

He is to be sentenced by Justice Bertram Morrison on April 12.

After the verdict, McLean, through his legal representative, Carlton Colman asked the judge to forego mitigation hearing and go straight to sentencing.

But Morrison said that would not be allowed.

"The court doesn't operate like that," Morrison said.

The judge then ordered a psychiatric report and an antecedent report.

Outside court, Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn said it was one of the top ten worst cases she has seen in her 30 years as a prosecutor.

McLean was convicted of killing his former girlfriend Terry-Ann Mohammed, her son, Jessie O'Gilvie, 9, as well as her niece, Patrice Martin-McCool and her children, Lloyd McCool, 3, Jihad McCool, 6, and Sean Chin, 9, in St Thomas on February 25, 2006.

Mohammed was found with her throat slashed and burns to her stomach and pubic area in bushes in the community of Needham Pen.

The bodies of Patrice Martin-McCool, her children, Lloyd McCool and Sean Chin and her nephew, Jessie O'Gilvie were found in bushes near Prospect Beach with their throats slashed.

The decomposing body of the sixth victim, six-year-old Jihad McCool, was found in a shallow grave in St Mary one week later.

He denied any involvement in the killings.

But prosecutors painted a different picture, saying the six were led to their deaths like lambs to the slaughter and McLean was the person responsible.
