Portland mother mourns her son
Lorraine Grant, a heart-broken mother, is struggling to come to grips with the untimely passing of her 20-year-old son, Kerone Dixon, whose life was snuffed out last Thursday afternoon at a bus park in Port Antonio.
According to the police, about 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, Dixon had a dispute with five high-school boys, when he allegedly attacked one of them with a piece of steel, but was overpowered. He was reportedly stabbed in the chest and beaten to a pulp by the boys, who also used a wooden stool to beat him.
"I was never even informed about my son's death. I only learned about the murder from a friend. I rushed to the nearby hospital, but was told that I could not see him, even though I identified myself as his mother," Grant told The Gleaner. "He was whisked away shortly after in a van, and, even now, I am not aware of where they have taken his body. My other two sons, who are below the age of 10 years, are in shock. We last saw him alive a day before he was killed."
Grant said she was uneasy last Thursday as she had a gut feeling that something was going to happen.
"The worst part about his killing is that persons were there taking pictures and making videos and no one saw it fit to intervene in trying to save a life. As a society, we have lost all moral values, and we no longer care for one another," Grant lamented.
"Jamaica is in a serious crisis. This is definitely the Book of Revelation fulfilling, which clearly states that 'the hearts of men have waxed cold'. Human life is of no value anymore," she remarked.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Throyville Haughton has appealed to residents occupying public spaces to be more vigilant and to assist with solving disputes.
"I am calling on those who, from time to time, might be a witness to disputes among persons for them to intervene, so as to prevent that dispute from escalating into possible murder," said Haughton. "As it relates to the recent stabbing death, we are following some strong leads, and very soon we hope to apprehend those involved in this gruesome incident."
