Orange Bay, Portland:

A suspect is in custody following the brutal slaying of a woman and the injuring of four others, after gunmen opened fire at a bar at Orange Bay, west Portland, yesterday morning.

One of the four injured persons remained in hospital yesterday evening, while the other three were treated and released.

Yesterday, 24-year-old Kimberly Baugh, who was five months pregnant, succumbed to injuries from the gun attack, which was reportedly carried out by three heavily armed thugs, who also robbed other persons of their cell phones and cash.

"The shooting took place about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, after patrons had exited a party in the Orange Bay community," said Deputy Superintendent of Police Throyville Haughton, who is based in Port Antonio.

"There were still a group of people at the venue where the party was held carrying out cleaning up operations, when three men appeared and started firing gunshots. Five persons were injured and rushed to hospital, but one of the persons was pronounced dead. Three were treated and released. One, however, remains at hospital. We have since taken a man into custody who we believe can assist with our investigation, " added Haughton.

Since the shooting, residents in the quiet community of Orange Bay have been in shock, and are struggling to come to grips with the shooting death of one of their own. However, they are adamant that Sunday's shooting was the result of a family dispute involving money.

According to a resident who asked not to be named, members of a family were making preparations for a party when a relative turned up and demanded money.

The resident said the man left after his demands were not met, but threatened to commit murder if he did not get his way upon his return.

The identity of the suspect is being withheld pending further investigations.
