JUTC establishes special teams to monitor buses

The management of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) has put in place special teams at all its depots in an effort to prevent further fires on its buses in light of three reported incidents over a seven-day period.

A fleet engineer has been put in charge of the team whose sole purpose will be to assess and monitor all the vehicles on a fortnightly basis instead of once per month.

This follows an emergency meeting yesterday to look into the bus fire that occurred along Hope Road in St Andrew about 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

The quick action of the driver prevented the fire from spreading as he used the extinguisher to put out the blaze. He was subsequently assisted by members of the Jamaica Fire Brigade.

The fire is suspected to have been be caused by an oil leak. No one was injured, and the superstructure of the bus was not compromised.

The bus will be back in operation in a few days.
