1 dead, tensions rise as bullets rain across Corporate Area
Police in the Corporate Area had their hands full yesterday, following two shooting incidents since Tuesday that left a man dead and another injured, with Old Hope Road and Maxfield Avenue communities engulfed in fear.
Onlookers at the Old Hope Road scene identified the dead man as Anthony Laoe, otherwise called ‘Shower Man’, who they claimed was a security guard at the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) headquarters and was once a resident of the Swallowfield community.
He was shot multiple times at the intersection of Downer Avenue and Old Hope Road after purchasing food at a restaurant he frequented.
The incident, which occurred about 2 p.m. yesterday, brought traffic to a snarl as police cordoned off a section of Old Hope Road to process the scene.
While cops were keeping order at that location, others were busy combing sections of ‘Diamond’ and ‘Spade’ corners, off Maxfield Avenue, where residents bemoaned a deadly gang rivalry, which, in recent months, left at least three men dead and another nursing gunshot wounds.
Police reported that they fired at armed men in the area about 10 yesterday morning, but residents of Diamond Corner claimed the police fired at innocent youngsters, even as they blamed men from nearby Spade corner as the aggressors.
This was after gunmen, late Tuesday night, opened fire at a house in the Diamond Corner area, hitting a man in both legs. That man is receiving treatment at hospital, the residents said.
“Dem come around here and a shoot at us. Dem say dem want kill off every man from around here,” lamented one male resident as he outlined a series of shootings between the two groups that resulted in three deaths recently.
“Dem go pon the road go kill one youth from ‘round here at him workplace. And same day, di man dem go retaliate and kill ‘bout two man from ‘round there. So from that time, dem don’t stop take set pon we,” added another man.
In the meantime, the residents say they are living in fear as even women are being targeted in the ongoing gang feud.
