Don't throw Peart's résumé at me

Gary Peart, chairman, BGLC, and chief executive officer of Mayberry Investments.

A Mr Stephen Wellington, in a recent letter responding to my previous letter expressing concern about a grave conflict of interest, eruditely gives us Mr Gary Peart's résumé as justification for his holding the position of chairman of the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC), while simultaneously serving as CEO of Mayberry Investments.

Mayberry Investments has a 100 per cent owned subsidiary which is listed among the top 10 shareholders of Supreme Ventures. Frankly, it is not about Mr Peart personally, so his résumé is null and void.

The issue, stripped of all else, is that Mr Peart's chairmanship of the BGLC, while being CEO of Mayberry, a company which has an investment in a company which conducts the country's only lottery, represents a fundamental conflict of interest.

We cannot argue that conflict away and it needs to be corrected. As a citizen of this country, I call on the portfolio minister responsible for the BGLC, Dr Peter Phillips, to move now at doing what everyone knows is the right thing to do.

We put up with far too much slackness.
