Gleaner 180 - Words from Readers

Published:Saturday | September 13, 2014 | 12:00 AM

The Gleaner has, for generations, been the paper of choice for the Jamaican public. Here are some thank-you notes sent in to us over the years.

January 6, 2000

The Editor, Madam:

THIS IS to commend you and The Gleaner's management for your bold leadership of the campaign to persuade our leaders to drop section 6 subsection 3 of the Anti-Corruption Bill aimed at destroying freedom of the press.

In the 1970s, we in the press suffered great intimidation, including the march of the Government Cabinet with supporters against The Gleaner, with speeches made outside the plant against us. There were also attempts to introduce harmful legislation, and worst of all was the 12 months State of Emergency which could have completely silenced the media.

But we did all we could to open our mouths sometimes. At one meeting at the Police Commissioner's Office, the Government insisted that we should send political statements received by us to one of the two commanding officers on duty, before publishing. We did our best to overcome this compulsion and succeeded.

THE EDITOR, Sir:

It would be an abject failure on my part had I not taken the time and patience to write and recognise the tremendous part The Gleaner has played in highlighting the achievements and shortcomings of the departments and agencies.
