Shame on Michael Frater

THE EDITOR, Sir:

It is with absolute disappointment and perhaps shock that I read of the news of Michael Frater's snubbing of the Courtney Walsh Award last Thursday.

According to the Jamaica Observer, the stand-in who received Frater's award reportedly said Frater "was sick, unable to walk and would require possible surgery to correct what was ailing him". The story went on to quote the gentleman who collected on his behalf that the only way the Olympian and sports administrator could have attended was by using crutches which, he said, would have been inappropriate.

Now to the shock. Frater was photographed that very same night in a public space at a birthday party. I think I can speak on behalf of hundreds of thousands of Jamaicans who have easily grown to respect Frater because of the workman-like way in which he went about his career. He is widely respected and seemed like the consummate team player.

There's now a dissonance in reconciling that character with what has been reported. It is very disappointing. Named in honour of sports star Courtney Walsh, the award recognises values dealing with the highest levels of honesty, integrity, discipline and professionalism.

Unless Frater can contradict the reports, at the very least, he must do some self-reflection and later apologise to Mr Walsh, the awards committee, and supporters. Shame on you!
