Ridiculous processing time for licence plate remake

This is an open letter to Tax Administration Jamaica.

On August 29, 2014, I was advised during a vehicle checkpoint that my motor vehicle registration plates were obscured and the person driving or using a motor vehicle with an obscured registration plate shall be guilty of an offence and the motor vehicle shall be liable to be seized and kept in the possession of the police until the requirements of the Road Traffic Act had been complied with.

It is important to note that I originally purchased my registration plates in 2003, which have been affixed to a motor vehicle in use from that time to date. Although the blue paint on the numbers and letters has faded and the white background now appears metallic, the registration plates were easily distinguishable and were not obscured.

Nevertheless, I proceeded to the Constant Spring tax office to purchase a remake of my existing licence plate, at a fee of $3,500. I was advised by the cashier that I should allow up to six months for processing and delivery time for the remake of an existing plate. This processing and delivery time of six months is ridiculous!!

Subsequently, on December 3, 2014, I contacted the Constant Spring tax office to ascertain if the registration plates were ready. I was advised that the request was sent off from the tax office to 'Procurement' on September 17, 2014, and the request was still at Procurement for processing as at the time of my call and was not yet sent to the 'Stores'.

My concerns are:

i) Why did it take 12 working days for the Constant Spring tax office to send off the request for a remake of my registration plates?

ii) Why after 55 working days, the request for remake of the registration plates was still at Procurement and not sent to Stores for the plates to be printed?

These highlight several

deficiencies in the system to procure a remake of an existing licence plate. I trust Tax Administration Jamaica will seek to revise the processing time for remake of an existing plate.
