THE EDITOR, Sir:

This is an open letter to the the new president of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica.

Dear Mr Mahfood:

On behalf of the board of management of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) and the more than 228,000 farmers in the agricultural sector, I wish to place on record our congratulations on your election as president of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) on December 19, 2014.

We are confident that the agricultural sector will continue to play an important role in Jamaica's development as the sector has been playing an important role on the economic landscape of Jamaica contributing to 18 per cent of the labour force, approximately seven per cent to GDP and through the 'Grow What We Eat' campaign, increasing local production of our food and reducing our food imports.

We would also like to use this opportunity to congratulate as well, the immediate past president, Christopher Zacca for his remarkable contribution in the position and to the process of nation building. We are confident that the Jamaica Agricultural Society and the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica will work together as we continue the desired objective of nation building.

We wish for you and your membership a happy holidays and a prosperous 2015 as the farmers advance the partnership for Jamaica's development with the PSOJ.

Norman W. Grant, JP

President, JAS
