Thwaites being given a pass by media
THE EDITOR, Sir:There goes reported 'well-performing' minister of education again fumbling the integration of two inner-city schools, and to top it all, he has the gumption to be saying that the people behaved in a disgraceful manner - and, of course, they did.
Do they know better? That is the question. Have they done this before? Sure, they have. Should the minister have been aware that a poorly managed process of amalgamating two schools would have caused such uproar? Of course, the Rhodes Scholar should.
Is Minister Thwaites being given a pass because he is a member of the cloth? An important cloth, too. The Roman Catholic Church is seen as a strong force in this country, and this has been so for some centuries.
The minister was also a talk-show host and has a good few connections within the media, and I cannot help but think that he has been given some leniency there, too.
We have to be careful how we also shore up persons who we think should be somehow protected because of their lineage because when they continue to commit serious errors in judgement, it may very well come back to haunt the very persons and institutions that have been providing a shield over time.
