Shame for watching Kayalicia suffer

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I think parents/guardians should be held accountable for the negative happenings in the lives of the children under their care. They should be charged by the police and locked up, just as they do the perpetrators of the crimes.

Most of these caregivers are not protecting children enough.

As in the case of 14-year-old student Kayalicia Simpson in the Newlands Housing Scheme, the neighbours knew what was happening to her and are just now reporting after the fact. Where were the villagers when Kayalicia needed them? I am blaming all the people who knew and did not speak out.

I would love to see Jamaicans again taking the stand that the parents cannot do it alone and that it takes a village to raise a child.

My heart bleeds for Kayalicia Simpson and all the other children who have met like fate.
