Choke the smoke

Published:Tuesday | March 17, 2015 | 3:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The Riverton dump fire issue brings to mind the practice in the United States and elsewhere of 'choking the smoke', i.e., using 'Phos-Chek', that red liquid substance used through an aerial drop on to fires of one kind or another.

Phos-Chek literally chokes the fire by cutting off oxygen from the immediate source area of the fire, oxygen which would otherwise be available as fuel to the fire.

My recommendation to the authorities, including the fire department, is to check on Phos-Chek for use in this and similar situations. The conditions for use do present some challenges, which are surmountable, but the advantages of 'choking the smoke' are tremendous.
