Obama's visit the best news ever
THE EDITOR, Sir:
President Obama's upcoming visit will be the most important stop by an international leader since Nelson Mandela's visit and that of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie back in 1966.
This is not to diminish the importance of the visit of the late former president of the US, Ronald Reagan back in 1982 or from any of the visits to Jamaica of HRH Queen Elizabeth II.
Obama is the first black US president after all, and that in and of itself makes the upcoming visit all the more historic, exciting and appealing. From an economic standpoint, at least for hotels in Kingston, President Obama's visit will bring a big financial boost.
Beyond that, the international media exposure Jamaica will receive from the presidential visit will prove priceless. Obama's visit will likely fuel an interest in Jamaica from Americans, who previously weren't sufficiently motivated to visit the island.
Also, President Obama's visit will probably spark new interest from foreign investors/companies that previously had little or no interest in Jamaica. All in all, Obama's upcoming visit is the best thing that could happen to Jamaica, especially given all the bad news Jamaicans have had to endure.
