Disgraceful headline wasn't mine!
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I wish to unreservedly and unhesitatingly apologise to the prime minister of Jamaica for the disgraceful headline that appeared over my column published on Sunday, April 12.
I did not write the headline. My Sunday columns are submitted to The Gleaner without headline (all Tuesday headlines are mine). It was never my intention to convey any such impression.
I wrote: "As prime minister, she reneges on that promise [to take a small step towards Jamaican gay liberation] and closets herself from media." Neither suggests hypocrisy nor cowardice. The first may suggest political expediency and the second political strategy. That's all.
Anyone who likes can criticise this and any prime minister's policies or actions, but NOBODY can successfully assert that Portia Simpson Miller is a coward or a hypocrite. I certainly wouldn't try.
I assure the prime minister this will not happen again.
