Teachers must not roll over in wage row

THE EDITOR, Sir:

When I see this People's National Party (PNP) Government showing scant regard for teachers with this five per cent pay hike proposal after asking them to hold strain with a multi-year salary freeze, it tells you that they do not think that education really matters.

The PNP has always had a strong alliance with the teachers' union, and a few of its members have gone on to become ministers of government. Yet the rank and file of the teaching profession are herded around like cattle and threatened and heckled when they ask for what is rightfully theirs.

The Government also tends to pit parents and the public against teachers whenever they want to bully teachers into submission. I hear the minister of education begging teachers to hold strain while negotiations continue, but it is high time that teachers let the Government know that when it wastes money, like the huge spending on the Obama visit, they won't think the State is being honest with this meagre wage deal.
