Raise age of consent to 18
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I agree with Chelan Smith's comments in the article 'Lower age of consent? Are you mad?' (Gleaner, June 10, 2015). We should support Sandrea Falconer to get the age of consent raised to 18! All the points Ms Falconer made are very real and we should all be concerned. Jamaica has too many teenage pregnancies, which we all know leads to crime eventually as children CANNOT raise children!
Owen Crosbie's call for a lowering of the age of consent is reprehensible. My daughter is 14 years old and I can guarantee you she is nowhere ready for sex at that age - neither mentally, emotionally or pschologically! They can barely focus on their schoolwork much less to go take on such a responsibility!
I hope Ms Falconer pursues this right until the age is actually raised to 18. We should also review the associated laws and ensure the penalties are increased drastically. It is full time that we assign a sentence of life imprisonment or the death penalty for rape, especially of young children, as those who commit these crimes are obviously animals and very uncivilised - not fit to see the light of day!
