Muslim men must have same wife limits

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I recently heard on the radio and saw on TVJ's morning show, 'Smile Jamaica' (Monday, June 8, 2015), an apparent campaign by Muslims in Jamaica for polygamous marriages.

But as is apparent, if God intended man to have more than one wife, He would not have made only Eve for Adam, as He did, but also would have made Eva and Evelyn and perhaps Evadney, too.

However, subsequently, He allowed Abraham to legally have sexual relations with other than his wife, Sarah (and the cause of much trouble in the world today). His grandson, Jacob, had more than one wife and also concubines.

David, the man "after God's own heart", also had several wives and many concubines, and perhaps this influenced his son, Solomon, to have 700 wives and 300 concubines. David could even have been allowed more wives, based on what the Lord said to him in 2 Samuel 12:8.

And in the Church, the injunction to have only one wife was stated only in relation to church leaders (1 Timothy 3:1-2, 8-12). Thus, Christian men who are not leaders in the church were not barred from having multiple wives.

However, Western law, influenced by Judaeo-Christianity, stipulates only one wife, and one husband, otherwise this is a case of bigamy, which is punishable under the law.

Christianity is not just a religion, like Islam is a religion, but is the major religion in Western societies. Thus, if Christian men are subject to one wife, despite the green light biblically to have more than one, then Muslim men, in Western society, should also be subject to just one wife, despite Islam allowing for four wives. What is good for the goose is good for the gander.

And many people, you give them an inch and they take a foot, and when stronger on the basis of the foot taken, usually next demand the whole square. Thus, as Jesus said, "Sufficient unto the day is its own evil." (Matthew 6:34b)
