Don't denigrate transgender folk

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Daniel Thwaites needs to live and let live. He mentions, in his column 'That's a man, baby!' (Sunday Gleaner, June 14, 2015), the original religious cross-dresser as St Joan of Arc, my patron saint at confirmation.

To me, the original is Jesus Christ in that long dress (still fashionable among Catholic clergy). How come Mr Thwaites didn't mention them in his article? After all, the Pope wears a long dress with red, Dorothy-from-Oz-type slippers. Yet Mr Thwaites omits those facts. Was it for fear of backlash from potential Catholic clients?

Mr Thwaites and his ilk need to get out of the jury box of life and stop judging people and look to their own lives. Anybody who believes in religion and a higher power does not know for a fact what happens to us after death, so leave Caitlyn Jenner and all the transgender people alone.

Instead of denigrating them, he should try to spend some time getting to know them and understand what they're going through. That's what Christ would do. That's what he came to teach us: Live and let live!
