Plea for help for Herb's widow
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Jamaica paid tribute to one of its renowned sons, Herb McKenley, on his passing some seven years ago. He was loved and respected the world over for his athletic achievements, bringing pride to his nation.
Herb gave passionately and unselfishly of his time in honing the skills of many youngsters wanting to be as successful as he.
Regrettably, though, three years ago, his widow was advised by mail of the stoppage to her of a benefit she was receiving. She wrote to many persons of influence for assistance in seeking a reversal of the decision. Many responded that they were "trying".
Presumably, an official funeral was enough.
