Wake up, INDECOM

Published:Thursday | September 24, 2015 | 9:00 AMTHE EDITOR, Sir:

On Tuesday (September 22) Mr Elan Powell, assistant commissioner of police in charge of crime, was a guest on TVJ's Smile Jamaica morning programme, and highlighted that some weapons in the possession of criminals far eclipse those in the hands of the police.

Yet, INDECOM's Mr Terrence Williams is proposing that police officers in this volatile, poverty stricken, corrupt and gang-plagued country be equipped with less-lethal weapons to fight crime.

One has to be cognisant of the fact that Jamaica is ranked 6th worldwide in homicides and first in the Caribbean, thus making it impractical for police officers to fight crime as if the national crime rate is that of the parish of Portland.

Wake up, INDECOM, be realistic not nonsensical. Crime in Jamaica is no joke!
