People's Report: Outrageous wrecker fees in Falmouth

Published:Saturday | October 31, 2015 | 10:00 AM

I am writing to express concern about the exorbitant fees being charged to retrieve vehicles seized by wreckers in the town of Falmouth, Trelawny. I recently had my vehicle towed for parking in an area near the Falmouth Market that I have always parked thinking it was acceptable to do so. I learnt the hard way.

I do take responsibility for my actions, but my problem is the whopping $11,000 that I was charged by the wrecker service for having my vehicle towed from the vicinity of the market to the police station in the same town. My vehicle spent about 20 minutes in the pound at the Falmouth Police Station (part of the reason for that was that I had to walk across town to get my vehicle to go home).

It is reasonable to pay for such errors, but I feel rather cheated by the outrageous figure charged. Is there a set rate for these activities, or are we left at the mercy of these individuals who charge these exorbitant sums?

I know my responsibilities, but wish to find out more about my rights.
