JMMB Phoenix working to ease noise nuisance

NORMAN

SIMPSON

Manager - Facilities

Thank you for affording us the opportunity to respond to the People's Report letter to the editor, written by Citizen X, and titled 'JMMB Phoenix a real pain in the ear', in your publication dated Saturday, December 5, 2015.

JMMB, and some of the Duncan family members who are employed to the company, recognise our role as good corporate citizens. We, therefore, always seek to honour our neighbours by causing minimal disturbance to them, and to be responsive in the instances where there are any oversights.

Our records show that we have been in dialogue, for quite some time, with a resident of Phoenix Avenue, referring to himself/herself as Citizen X, regarding similar areas of concern raised in the letter.

In 2014, we had made particular commitments to the resident, with a view to addressing the concerns raised by limiting potentially noisy activities. In the interest of clarity and openness, here is what we had committed, and have been adhering to since that time:

1. Confined hours for construction activities

As a growing organisation, we have sought and received the requisite approvals to expand our head office premises. Being mindful of any noise nuisance to our neighbours, our hours of construction are limited to Mondays through Fridays, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., and on Saturdays, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

2. Managing the volume level of music for gym classes

Our employee-only gym holds exercise classes solely on weekday evenings, between the hours of 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Music usually accompanies those classes. While we always do our best to keep that volume at a minimum, we welcome any additional feedback from our neighbours, if it is believed that that volume can be further lowered.

3. Eliminating gardening activities that use machinery at our Phoenix branch location

Given the proximity of that location to residences on Phoenix Avenue, we had ceased all leaf-blowing and bush-cutting activities that use machinery at that branch.

4. Garbage truck collection activities after midnight

This is the most challenging matter to address, as the garbage-collection service, which collects refuse from JMMB and other businesses in the area, opts to do that collection at nights. It is our understanding that that option is chosen, as it is easier for the truck to manoeuvre through the business district at that time, as opposed to navigating the parked vehicles and traffic that occur in the days and evenings.

We have asked the garbage company to amend its pickup time, however it opts to continue its late-night service to everyone it serves and, unfortunately, we are not in a position to control the company's operations. We invite any concrete recommended alternatives to this challenge, as it is not our intention to disturb our neighbours.

If, at any time, we are found to be falling short of our commitments, we encourage our neighbours and any other stakeholders to contact us so that we may have the opportunity to address such concerns in a manner that achieves a win-win for all parties, and is consistent with our values of love and mutual respect.
