Letter of the Day: A 'joke' gone too far
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Reports of Chris Gayle's inappropriate remarks to a female journalist have been making the rounds on the world media. A few hours ago, it was announced that he had been fined for these ill-chosen words.
Last evening, I watched with sorrow Gayle's unabashed attempt to explain and defend his unfortunate words. Reflecting on the interview through the fable of Achilles' heel, I urge him to take stock of his idea of a "simple joke". He has shown little understanding of the error of his ways in this situation. It really is disappointing that he could so effortlessly slip into an unprofessional mode of communication in a formal exchange.
He is, perhaps unwittingly, creating for himself a worldwide profile that may yet come back to haunt him. I trust that it is not too late for him to learn from the many who demonstrate expected civility in their speech.
Be ye careful, Mr Gayle!
