Tackle crime in 2016
THE EDITOR, Sir:
What would make 2016 a happy new year for Jamaica? I certainly believe that if the crime rate would drop to a low level, it would be a good year for Jamaica, because nobody wants to lose their lives senselessly, and too many people have already lost their lives in this country. Therefore, due to the fact that crime is our biggest problem - and a massive one at that - we all would be happy if the country's murder rate would drop from that peak.
On the other hand, many of us talk about New Year's wish. Our New Year's wish and desire should be a national one, with a slogan saying: 'Cut down on crime; we want peace; no more bloodshed; we are fed up and tired of it'.
Crime and violence have reached a very bad stage in this county, to the point where we should commit ourselves, or go the extra mile with a burning passion, to bring down this life-taking scenario to ground level.
When 16 good people lose their lives in crime and violence, it's too many, never mind a thousand; when 50 have been killed by crime pests, it's a large number, never mind a 1,000-plus. We should all put our shoulders to the wheel in an attempt to challenge this crime monster in this new year.
