UTASP retracts statement on job cuts at Noranda

Published:Thursday | January 7, 2016 | 1:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN The Gleaner dated Tuesday, January 5, 2016, in article headlined 'Proposed job cuts at Noranda Bauxite takes union by surprise', I was quoted as saying that the union has not been consulted on proposed reduction in job positions at Noranda.

The union and Noranda Bauxite Company have been in discussion since December about the 3 to 5 per cent reduction in job positions. There is a level of understanding between the company and the union based on what is happening to bauxite in the overseas market. As a result, there will be further discussion on this issue between the parties as we go forward.

The Union of Technical, Administrative and Supervisory Personnel (UTASP) is retracting the above statement and deeply regrets any embarrassment, confusion or misunderstanding that may be caused.
