PNP coarsened after abandoning middle class

Published:Wednesday | January 13, 2016 | 1:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I think that National Hero Norman W. Manley would be turning in his grave to see what is happening in the People's National Party (PNP) today, but I do not think his son Michael would be turning in his as I have no doubt that he would have been expecting this as consequence of his action when he changed the PNP from the party of the middle class and the rich to the party of the grass roots purely to get more votes.

While this change works very well for the PNP, giving them a broader base of support and making them the party that has governed Jamaica for longer periods than the JLP, there is a shift in the very high standard of conduct of the PNP as the tail is now wagging the dog.

Many of the persons who are now holding certain offices in the PNP would not have even been considered for such positions, much more to be given the opportunity to serve, when under Norman Manley. The PNP was of a higher standard then.
