Michael Manley was no idiot

Winston Maragh, a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) councillor for the Rocky Point division in Clarendon, has described former Prime Minister Michael Manley as an "idiot". His characterisation of the late Mr Manley has left millions of Jamaicans here and across the world who knew, loved and are aware of Manley's legacy, with an invidious feeling.

Many of us knew Manley as a passionate and unrelenting campaigner for social justice and the reason why most of us, maybe including Maragh could find himself n a political platform.

Jamaican workers will always remember Michael Manley and the then People's National Party administration for the body of legislation and programmes that expanded workers' rights and raised the workers' standard of living, including the minimum wage and the compulsory recognition of trade unions.

It was Michael Manley's work that repealed the archaic Bastardy Act, giving rights to children born to unmarried parents.

These are only a few of the myriad pieces of legislation that Michael Manley introduced that the entire country now takes for granted.

How could such a man be an idiot?

History will prove him to be one of the greatest leaders of our country, and among the best in the world.

The points you raised and descriptor you used in reference to Michael Manley were all baseless and obviously without thought.

I will immediately concede that all Jamaicans, indeed all persons in the world are entitled to their political beliefs. However, for a man who has sold himself to the general public as being fit for political representation, you have lost all semblance of worth.

Don't let your party fool you; Manley was one of the best.
