Sullivan's pool exploits preceded Yona's
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Our talented Jamaican athletes have a great following around the world, and Yona Knight-Wisdom has a wonderful opportunity to propel his host nation into the spotlight once again. I hope he will inspire Jamaicans, not only to take more interest in diving, but also to encourage our youngsters to broaden their horizons and try out the sport.
There has been a misrepresentation in the news media regarding Yona being the first diver to represent Jamaica in the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. That distinction belongs to Betsy Sullivan, who did it in 1966 at the age of 10 at the Commonwealth Games, and in 1972 at the age of 16 at the Munich Olympics.
Jamaica has produced two Olympic divers.
