Racism rubbish over Oscars

Published:Monday | March 7, 2016 | 3:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

With regard to the recent Oscars ceremony and accusations of racism by the Academy, this is not borne out if you look at African-American winners over its 87-year history, BUT did any member of the white, hand-wringing media class check out the facts before pandering to the Jada Pickett-Smith school of #SoWhiteOScars?

Here's a list of Black Oscar winners (not including those nominated):

Hattie McDaniels, Denzel Washington, Louis Gossett Jr, Sydney Poitier (Honorary Award), Lupita Nyong'o, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Hudson, Mo' Nique, Octavia Spencer, T.J. Martin, Roger Ross Williams, Prince, Herbie Hancock, William D. Burton, Russell Williams, Geoffrey Fletcher, John Ridley, James Earl Jones (Honorary Award) Spike Lee (Honorary Award 2015).

Honorary awards are for a body of work done over time.

It is outrageous that even though he received an Honorary Academy Award in 2015, Spike Lee was one of the big names to boycott the ceremony.
