Get to work, Shaw

Published:Tuesday | March 8, 2016 | 3:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Congratulations to Audley Shaw on his reappointment as finance minister. My best wishes to him and the other members of the Andrew Holness Government, as they get to work on the country's business.

With his reappointment and his stridency while in opposition, I expect Shaw to move with alacrity to find and release funds to address two key issues.

I speak of the estimated $10 million required for the Financial Sector Adjustment Company (FINSAC) Commission of Enquiry to publish its report and the estimated $2 billion needed for the Electoral Commission of Jamaica to carry out the national voter reverification exercise.

The money for the FINSAC report can probably be found relatively soon so that closure can be brought to this important matter.

We may need to wait, however, until at least the 2017-18 Budget to find the funds for the voter reverification exercise. Every effort must be made to have this exercise completed before the next general parliamentary elections that are due at the end of the current five-year term.
