Mudslinging against Portia shameful

Published:Wednesday | March 9, 2016 | 12:00 AM

Former Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller is not deserving of the malicious lambasting meted out to her by all and sundry during the election campaign. Social media and members of the public, in general, had a field day by posting distasteful, derogatory images and nasty comments about her. This kind of madness and political tribalism must stop. It is a practice that is quite disturbing and appalling.

Like all of us, Simpson Miller has flaws. Citizens should desist from hiding behind the screen of social media in degrading others because they feel it is cool to do so. We shouldn't engage in such abuse because we have a responsibility as citizens to have common decency, even where there are differences in opinions.

Mrs Simpson Miller's contribution to Jamaica must never be overlooked. One must remember that for each portfolio she held, her performance was sterling. She might not have executed in managing the country's affairs in a manner pleasing to all, but which leader does?
