Think seriously about waste

Published:Wednesday | March 16, 2016 | 12:00 AM

At a recent meeting the prime minister mentioned plans to separate non degradable and degradable waste at the source. Good idea. However, I do hope the government realises that the source of this waste are homes, schools, industries and business places, half of which are not properly educated on the different types of waste, the importance of separation and how to separate them. Proper education is key. You cannot expect people to sort waste when recycling bags are not readily available and there are not different waste bins in major towns and communities across the island.

Sustainable waste management is not a JLP or PNP issue. This will require discipline from government, opposition and the Jamaican Diaspora. We must start to 'Reduce, Reuse and Recycle'. These three main 'Rs' of effective waste management need to be a core practice in this country. The introduction of fair and effective waste quotas and a polluter pay system for private and public companies should also be considered. It must be made clear that environmental pollution will not be tolerated.
