Big-up for tourism networking

Published:Monday | March 21, 2016 | 3:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I thank the Ministry of Tourism, along with the organisers of the Tourism Linkages Hub's Speed Networking Event, which had its third staging recently in Montego Bay.

The Tourism Linkages Hub was developed to strengthen linkages and increase business opportunities for local suppliers of goods and services in manufacturing, agriculture, entertainment, craft and other sectors of the economy with buyers in the tourism sector.

In layman terms, the hub, through its Speed Networking Event, facilitates tourism industry players and suppliers of manufacturing, agriculture, artisans and craftsmen to come together under one roof to try to foster business linkages beneficial to both sides. This coming together was held last Thursday at Hilton Rose Hall Resort and Spa, St James. And what an event it was!

golden opportunity

As a local supplier of artwork to adorn the walls of hotel rooms, I could not pass up this golden opportunity afforded me and other suppliers by the Tourism Linkages Hub to actually meet face to face with representatives of tourism industry players such as Sandals Resorts, Iberostar and Couples Resorts, to name a few. The convenience of being able to actually approach a hotel or resort chain with your business pitch was a godsend. I am forever grateful to the organisers.

While the organisers of the Speed Networking Event have done the hard work of putting industry players and goods and services providers together, allowing them to form business linkages, the responsibility afterwards is left on the suppliers.

I would like to thank the following persons who made this all possible: the former minister of tourism, Dr Wykeham McNeill; his successor, Edmund Bartlett; president of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association, Nicola Madden-Greig; project manager, Tourism Linkages Hub, Carolyn McDonald Riley; and her entire staff who made sure that suppliers such as myself were well informed prior to the staging of the event.

Keep up the great work!
